In this world of big data and data-driven decisions/development/design, it seems like there’s no space for our own experience and intuitions to contribute. But I want to argue that the issue doesn’t lie with our intuition, but instead in the way that we communicate data. We tend to represent data as averages and medians, which hides the uncertainty in the data and makes data seem so precise that our intuition just can’t compete. But the uncertainty is still there, and in this presentation, I’ll show you a way to surface it and open up a way to incorporate our experiences as data too.

Simulating day trading strategies for fun and profit - David Božjak
Simulation is a tried and tested tool for comparing different approaches in a wide variety of applications including gaining confidence before taking any kind of irreversible actions. In this short talk I will introduce you to my newly open sourced hobby project [C#] that allows for very easy comparison between stock trading strategies. We will use this environment to talk concretely about confidence intervals, understanding risk and communicating it clearly and transparently.

We believe that all views are equally important in our world, regardless if you’re a data engineer working your way through an obscure data model, a software engineer helping your fellow colleague understand the data generated from your application, or a product owner viewing product metrics. We therefore want to gather everyone into the Data Alliance to share their past and current struggles and/or solutions, no matter if they were successful or not. These experiences will spark illuminating discussions for everyone involved, especially the presenter.

Format:
A few presentations à 10-20 min and an open discussion with the audience after each one. There will be time for food and mingle somewhere in the middle of the event.
