The theme of this meetup is sovereign infrastructure. We invite Internetstiftelsen and Scandinavian Airlines to share with us their experience building with a Kubernetes stack.

European Interest and effort in digital sovereignty has grown over the last decade in response to a variety of factors. Security and infrastructure are among the more salient interests.In terms of security and privacy, laws such as the USA’s FISA and Cloud Act and China’s Cyber Security Law raise immediate concerns for how to keep the EU residents' data safe.

Meanwhile, the continued market dominance of hyperscalers (e.g.: Google, Amazon, Microsoft) means both states and private entities in the EU continue to struggle to develop their own data infrastructure and the talent pool to maintain it. This remains a significant source of risk.

This is not to say there hasn’t been progress. Certainly, there’ve been important milestones. MVHcloud, Hetzner, and many other VPS providers in multiple countries have led the way. Newer players, like Sweden’s Evroc, aspire to hypescaler ambition and have acquired the investments to match.Closer to home, Internetstiftelsen and Försäkringskassan are pioneers in this field.

Physical hardware, VMs, container orchestration, and their tooling are key to enabling organizations to build out their own infrastructure and data. It’s not an easy field. There is high complexity and many pitfalls. But it’s vital for security and peace of mind.
